Intro to Shibori Dyeing

In this 3-hour class, Shelby Joiner (Arizona Opera’s Painter/Dyer) will lead attendees through the process of banding and tying fabric to create Shibori techniques with indigo dye. Most needed materials are covered in the class fee. Materials will be mailed to attendee or can be picked up at the Arizona Opera Office Building (1636 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004) for those attending virtually. Supplies will be available at the time of the class for those attending in-person.

This class will be recorded. Access to this recording is included with the purchase of this Masterclass; the link for this recording will be emailed 3-5 days after the live class.

If you are attending virtually, you will need a hot plate or a stove for this class. Be sure you wear paint friendly clothes and work in an area that can get messy. Also, do NOT ever use items you eat with for dye projects!

Supplies Provided:

• indigo dye - 8 Fl oz
• fixative - 8 Fl oz
• rubber bands - 10 pieces
• poly twine - 1 yard
• marbles - 10 pieces
• acrylic squares - 2 pieces
• dowel rod - 1 foot
• gloves - 2 pairs
• cotton twine - 1 yard
• cotton fabric - 0.5 yards
• stones - 10 pieces

Supplies NOT Provided for Virtual Attendees:

• dye safe work surface
• gallon size bucket (optional)
• dye pot
• dye spoon
• stove/hot plate
• washing machine
• dryer

Please Note: If you would like your kit to be shipped to you, orders must be placed by October 11, 2021. If you are picking up your kit from the Arizona Opera Center or attending in-person, your order must be placed by October 14, 2021.

Safety Requirements

In-person attendees will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the class. Attendees providing Arizona Opera with proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will be granted an exception to this requirement. Masks will be required for all attendees.
