Intro to Silk Screening

Description

In this two part 4-hour class, Shelby Joiner (Arizona Opera’s Painter/Dyer) will lead attendees through the process of applying photo emulsion, exposing the silk screen and then using it to paint an apron.

Part One: November 4, 2021 at 4:30 PM MST
This one-hour session can either be attended in person at the Arizona Opera Center (1636 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004) or virtually via Zoom. The first part of this class will demonstrate and talk attendees through the process of mixing their photo emulsion chemicals and preparing their silk screens.

Part Two: November 6, 2021 at 12 PM MST
This two and a half-hour session can either attended in person at the Arizona Opera Center (1636 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004) or virtually via Zoom. The second part of this class will be the actual silk screen exposure and painting process. Most needed materials are covered in the class fee. Materials will be mailed to attendee or can be picked up at the Arizona Opera Center (1636 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004) for those attending virtually. Supplies will be available at the time of the sessions for those attending In-person.   

This class will be recorded. Access to this recording is included with the purchase of this Masterclass; the link for this recording will be emailed 3-5 days after the live class. Be sure you wear paint friendly clothes and work in an area that can get messy. Attendees can also provide their own cotton T-shirt to silk screen after their apron.

Supplies Provided:

• Photo emulsion & sensitizer- 1 set
• speedball paint (1 oz each of 2 colors)- 2oz
• Screen (7.8" x 10")- 2 each
• Squeegee- 2 each
• Stir stick- 4 each
•  1 pair of latex free gloves
• Transparency sheet- 2 each
• 1 Apron

Supplies NOT provided for Virtual Attendees:

• Painter’s tape
• Box to cover screen
• Dark work area
• Ink jet printer
• Sink with water (spray nozzle preferred)

Please Note: If you would like your kit to be shipped to you, orders must be placed by October 28, 2021. If you are picking up your kit from the Arizona Opera Center or attending in-person, your order must be placed by November 3, 2021.

Safety Requirements

In-person attendees will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the class. Attendees providing Arizona Opera with proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will be granted an exception to this requirement. Masks will be required for all attendees.
